By David Keever and Mike Powell
Last week, Mike went 7-3, while I had a record of 8-2. Cherryville overcame a 21-point deficit and left the both of us with a loss, and we both took Shelby who came up on the losing end at Kings Mountain.
The only game we differed on was Freedom at Crest. I got this one correct only because Crest basically had the ball last, scoring with about a minute to go in a 51-48 shootout.
So who knows what could happen this week. That’s what makes high school football fun!
Here we go with Week 6!
North Lincoln at West Lincoln: DK: Don’t look for quite as low scoring a game as last year’s 7-6 North Lincoln win in Pumpkin Center, although I don’t expect either team to reach their season scoring average. The two big questions to me are, who will start at QB for the Knights, and can Canon Bridges keep dominating on the ground for the Rebels …
DK: North Lincoln 35, West Lincoln 28; MP: North Lincoln 28, West Lincoln 20
Lincolnton at Newton-Conover: MP: The Wolves enter South Fork 2A Conference play on a two-game streak, but they will be tested on the road by a Newton-Conover team that has been up and down. I simply think the Red Devils are good enough offensively to outscore a Lincolnton team that has struggled to generate a lot of points. However, the game should be competitive … MP: Newton-Conover 28, Lincolnton 22; DK: Newton-Conover 24, Lincolnton 14
Lake Norman Charter at East Lincoln: DK: In a conference that seems pretty even from top to bottom, this is the one matchup of the night that I think almost everyone will agree on. The Mustangs have been dominant on defense, and will be again tonight … DK: East Lincoln 42, Lake Norman Charter 14; MP: East Lincoln 49, Lake Norman Charter 20
Bandys at Maiden: DK: Two old rivals hook up again tonight in Maiden, with the defending South Fork 2A champion Trojans in town. South Caldwell may have defeated Maiden and lost to Bandys, but I’m not letting that sway my pick … DK: Maiden 28, Bandys 27; MP: Maiden 21, Bandys 17
Thomas Jefferson at Cherryville: MP: While it is true that unbeaten Thomas Jefferson has not been tested yet (one of its wins, over Christ the King, was by forfeit), the Gryphons have run up lopsided scores on all of their opponents. The Ironmen (2-3, 2-0) are better than anyone TJCA has faced, but I like the Gryphons to spoil homecoming night at Rudisill Stadium … MP: Thomas Jefferson 42, Cherryville 14; DK: Thomas Jefferson 40, Cherryville 10
Fred T. Foard at Patton: DK: The Tigers are still in search of their first win, and both teams have had their struggles. This is a tough game to pick, and I may be stretching a little here going with a winless team on the road … DK: Foard 27, Patton 21; MP: Foard 20, Patton 13
Hibriten at Bunker Hill: MP: The Bears are still riding high from their upset of Bandys on Friday the 13th, but they come back down to earth against powerful Hibriten in this Northwestern Foothills 2A Conference opener … MP: Hibriten 35, Bunker Hill 7; DK: Hibriten 42, Bunker Hill 14
Hunter Huss at North Gaston: MP: Huss carries a three-game win streak into this Big South 3A opener, and the Huskies’ offense has been bolstered with the addition of former Charlotte Catholic and three-star running back Lamagea McDowell. Their defense has been good from day one … MP: Hunter Huss 42, North Gaston 13; DK: Hunter Huss 33, North Gaston 14
South Point at Burns: DK: Another good matchup as the Bulldogs play their first game ever as a member of Southwestern 2A Conference. The Red Raiders seem to be coming together, but Burns has three solid wins in a row after their season-opening loss to Kings Mountain … DK: Burns 28, South Point 21; MP: Burns 27, South Point 24
Crest at Forestview: Having seen both teams play (Crest twice), I foresee a wide-open, high-scoring game. I am going with Crest because of the Chargers’ big play threats on offense and the momentum they generated from last week’s thrilling 51-48 win over Freedom … MP: Crest 41, Forestview 28; DK: Crest 28, Forestview 20
Last week: David 8-2, Mike 7-3
Overall: David 41-9, Mike 40-10
