Week 2 Football Forecast

(By David Keever and Mike Powell)

Last week, both Mike and myself missed the North Lincoln overtime loss at Parkwood, and we each missed an upset pick.  Mike went with St. Stephens to upset Bandys, while I took the underdog Wolves against Stuart Cramer.

While 80% is not bad in the world of pick-ems, we both strive for perfection.  Let’s see how we do in Week 2.

East Rutherford at North Lincoln: MP: Both teams need a win to avoid an 0-2 start, so give North Lincoln the edge at home … MP: North Lincoln 32, East Rutherford 26;  DK: North Lincoln 35, East Rutherford 16

East Lincoln at East Rowan: DK: It’s a battle of Mustangs tonight in Rowan County as East Lincoln finally opens their season against 1-0 East Rowan.  The East Lincoln defense has been dominant in the pre-season … DK: East Lincoln 27, East Rowan 12;  MP: East Lincoln 24, East Rowan 20

South Point at Lincolnton: MP: Few teams have any desire to play South Point coming off a loss, and you can bet the Red Raiders have made adjustments since the Crest game. However, the offense has been slowed by injuries, and Lincolnton’s defense looked solid against Stuart Cramer. The annual matchup has the makings of a good one …  MP: South Point 21, Lincolnton 14;  DK: South Point 28, Lincolnton 14

Cherryville at Chase: MP: Chase won by double digits last week at Bessemer City, but benefited from multiple turnovers by the Yellow Jackets. Meanwhile, Cherryville won comfortably over Christ the King, a new entry in the Southern Piedmont 1A and a 1-9 finisher a year ago. Neither Chase nor Cherryville answered many questions in their openers … MP: Chase 28, Cherryville 19; DK: Chase 33, Cherryville 22

South Caldwell at Maiden: DK: The Spartans rolled to a 60-7 win last week over rival West Caldwell, while the Blue Devils cruised past Fred T. Foard 48-24.  Can the Blue Devils hold the South Caldwell offense in check? … DK: Maiden 35, South Caldwell 14; MP: Maiden 38, South Caldwell 12

Fred T Foard at Bandys: DK: For the second straight week, the Tigers face a South Fork 2A opponent.  The Trojans appear to have picked up where they left off last year … DK: Bandys 38, Foard 21;  MP: Bandys 26, Foard 19

Polk County at North Gaston:  MP: An odd matchup and a lengthy bus ride for Polk County. In their season debuts, North Gaston eased past East Gaston and Polk rolled over Cherokee. This game is hard to predict, but the Wildcats get the nod on home turf … MP: North Gaston 21, Polk County 19; DK: Polk County 32, North Gaston 18

Ashbrook at AL Brown: DK: The season opener for both the Green Wave and the Little Wonders.  A lot of green will fill the stadium in Kannapolis, playing on the newly installed field turf … DK: AL Brown 28, Ashbrook 20;  MP: AL Brown 34, Ashbrook 22

A.C. Reynolds at Shelby: MP: Most observers pick Shelby to march to another state title, and the Golden Lions opened in impressive fashion last week against Freedom.  Reynolds faces a defending state titlist for the second consecutive week (East Forsyth beat the Rockets 35-23 on opening night) … MP: Shelby 35, AC Reynolds 14; DK: Shelby 42, AC Reynolds 21

Kings Mountain at Monroe: DK: The Mountaineers have to wait one more week to play on their new field turf.  However, tonight, they’ll play on turf at Monroe. Kings Mountain’s offense is tough to stop … DK: Kings Mountain 34, Monroe 21;  MP: Kings Mountain 42, Monroe 27

Last week: Mike Powell 8-2, David Keever 8-2.
