After Wilmington Post 10 tied the game at two all with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, Fuquay-Varina retook the lead for good with an RBI single from Zach Guyer that scored Garrett McGraw in the top of the seventh.
Wilmington put runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but a pop out and a swinging strike out ended the threat and kept the Post 116 Nationals unbeaten in pool play.
Wilmington outhit Fuquay-Varina 6 to 4, led by Jac Croom’s two hits, including a long solo home run to right-center that tied the game at 2-2. Post 116 had no player with more than one hit.
Fuquay-Varina (2-0) will open the action on Sunday with an 11 a.m. game with the Gaston Braves. Wilmington (1-1) will face Davidson County at 4:30 p.m.
