Wes Reynolds reached on a leadoff walk in the first inning, advanced to third base on a throwing error by the Union County pitcher and scored on Robbie Cowie’s sacrifice fly that proved to be the difference in Post 100’s 1-0 win over Post 535 Saturday afternoon in Cherryville.
Union didn’t mount a serious threat until the top of the seventh when they put runners at second and third base with one out, before Cowie, who came on in relief, recorded the final two outs for the save.
The win pushed Post 100’s record to 2-0 in pool play with one game left on Sunday evening against Randolph County. Cherryville would have to give up 13 runs more than Kinston on Sunday to be eliminated from Monday’s semifinal round.
Post 100’s win over Union County was their third 1-0 win over Post 535 since the playoffs began in early July.
