By David Keever and Mike Powell
Another 80% (8-2) week last Friday for both Mike and myself. We both missed the Bandys-South Caldwell game, even though it was one we thought could go either way.
However, we were both stunned by the margin of the 35-14 Crest loss against Burns. Perhaps the Chargers were looking ahead to tonight’s game at Shelby.
Here we go with Week 4.
North Gaston at East Lincoln: MP: The Mustangs made a believer out of me with their win on the road at Ashbrook last week, after having lost five of the previous six meetings with the Green Wave. Add East Lincoln to the list of bonafide South Fork 2A Conference contenders … MP: East Lincoln 35, North Gaston 13; DK: East Lincoln 35, North Gaston 7
West Lincoln at Fred T. Foard: DK: At this point, I’m starting to believe the Rebels can match last year’s 9-win season. Yeah, they’re only 2-0, but I can’t imagine they won’t be 4-0 heading into their showdown with North Lincoln on September 27 … DK: West Lincoln 49, Foard 21; MP: West Lincoln 48, Fred T. Foard 21
East Gaston at Lincolnton: MP: Freshman QB Reid King has filled in admirably for injured starter E.J. Mangerres the last two games, suggesting that the future is bright for the Wolves at that position. Lincolnton evens its record at 2-2 … MP: Lincolnton 27, East Gaston 14; DK: Lincolnton 38, East Gaston 20
St Stephens at Maiden: DK: The Blue Devils got off to a slow start last Friday night against Bunker Hill before pulling away. I think they start much faster tonight … DK: Maiden 42, St. Stephens 18; MP: Maiden 22, St. Stephens 8
Draughn at Cherryville: MP: Draughn was blown out in its first two games, but the Wildcats showed surprising punch last week by hanging 55 points on Fred T. Foard. Cherryville, meanwhile, has struggled to put anything together since its season opener … MP: Draughn 42, Cherryville 21, DK: Draughn 45, Cherryville 31
Bunker Hill at Bandys: DK: The Trojans surprised me a bit last week with their somewhat comfortable 10-point win over South Caldwell. It’s a big rivalry game tonight, but I still think Bandys is too much for the Bears … DK: Bandys 38, Bunker Hill 21; MP: Bandys 35, Bunker Hill 7
South Point at Forestview: MP: I am going against history here, but Forestview looked terrific last week in a 64-0 win over Bessemer City. Perhaps that performance will give the Jaguars the confidence and motivation they need to pull the upset at home … MP: Forestview 24, South Point 21; DK: South Point 21, Forestview 14
Newton-Conover at Hendersonville: DK: One of the better matchups of the night from our area teams. Toughest pick of the week for me, but I’ll take the Bearcats only because they are at home … DK: Hendersonville 28, Newton-Conover 24; MP: Hendersonville 38, Newton-Conover 27
Mountain Heritage at Stuart Cramer: DK: This is the long-distance matchup of the week in our area, as the 2-0 Cougars travel 117 miles to Belmont. I’ll take the Cougars even after the long trip … DK: Mountain Heritage 28, Stuart Cramer 14; MP: Mountain Heritage 28, Stuart Cramer 27
Crest at Shelby: MP: George Blanton Stadium is the scene for one of the biggest games of the season in Cleveland County. Let’s see, the Chargers lost last week to Burns, and they face formidable odds against another county rival in this one. And Kings Mountain looms down the road in conference play … MP: Shelby 42, Crest 24; DK: Shelby 28, Crest 20
Last week: David Keever 8-2, Mike Powell 8-2
Overall: David Keever 25-5, Mike Powell 24-6
