Football Forecast Week 12

By David Keever and Mike Powell —-

What in the world happened last week?  Mike and David had their worst week of the season, both going 4-6.  There were several one-point games and even a couple of overtime thrillers, but that’s no excuse.  We must do better!

Here we go with Week 12.  Yes, the final week of the 2019 regular season.

East Lincoln at Newton-Conover: DK: If Maiden should fall tonight in an upset at Lincolnton, the winner of this game would take control of the number two seed out of the South Fork 2A Conference.  Don’t look for that to happen, but the winner should move up in MaxPreps rankings while the loser will drop … DK: East Lincoln 28, Newton-Conover 24; MP: East Lincoln 32, Newton-Conover 27.

Maiden at Lincolnton: MP: The Blue Devils are coming off of a one-point overtime win over rival Newton-Conover, and there remains much to play for. A win puts the Blue Devils at 8-3, 5-2, and enhances their resume for the playoffs … MP: Maiden 34, Lincolnton 13; DK: Maiden 31, Lincolnton 14.

North Lincoln at Bandys: DK: What a difference a year makes.  Last year, the Knights dropped a one-point game at home that gave the Trojans the conference championship.  This season, North Lincoln has already sewn up the top seed out of the SF2A, but wants to win the title outright.  Shouldn’t be a problem … DK: North Lincoln 42, Bandys 14; MP: North Lincoln 42, Bandys 12.

Lake Norman Charter at West Lincoln: MP: The Rebels should have little trouble posting their eighth win of the season on senior night at Doug Leonhardt Memorial Stadium. The question is: Will West Lincoln catch a break in the playoff pairings and not run into a power team like Shelby in the first round? That was the case a year ago … MP: West Lincoln 42, Lake Norman Charter 12; DK: West Lincoln 49, Lake Norman Charter 21.

Cherryville at Bessemer City: MP: The Ironmen have had Bessemer City’s number of late, but that trend changes in this regular season finale between the backyard rivals. The Yellow Jackets avenge last year’s loss in the series and clinch a tie for the Southern Piedmont 1A Conference championship … MP: Bessemer City 45, Cherryville 20; DK: Bessemer City 40, Cherryville 18.

West Caldwell at Bunker Hill: DK: The Bears have a chance to lock up the number two seed in the Northwestern Foothills 2A Conference, even after last week’s narrow loss to Patton … DK: Bunker Hill 35, West Caldwell 7; MP: Bunker Hill 30, West Caldwell 19.

East Gaston at East Rutherford: MP: The Cavaliers (0-10) lost three close games in a row early, and that sent them on a downward spiral from which they never recovered. But here is a chance for East Rutherford to avoid the stigma of a winless season, so the team is sure to be motivated … MP: East Rutherford 21, East Gaston 19; DK: East Rutherford 27, East Gaston 24.

Shelby at South Point: DK: It’s probably been a while since the Red Raiders entered the final week of the regular season without a chance of at least a share of a conference championship. They could, however, knock the Golden Lions into a tie with Burns with a victory … DK: Shelby 35, South Point 14; MP: Shelby 35, South Point 13.

Hickory at St. Stephens: DK: When the Indians are listed in the forecast, it’s always a tough pick. Tonight is no exception as they face the rival Red Tornados.  DK: Hickory 27, St. Stephens 24; MP: Hickory 22, St. Stephens 19.

Kings Mountain at Crest: MP: The Chargers, winners of six in a row, have had two weeks to prepare for a game that will either give Crest the Big South 3A title outright or create a probable three-way tie for first place.  Kings Mountain has played extremely well since its October loss to Hunter Huss, most recently in a 54-3 dismantling of Forestview last week. I look for a ton of points and big plays galore … MP: Kings Mountain 42, Crest 35; DK: Crest 31, Kings Mountain 30.

Last week: Mike 4-6, David 4-6

Overall: David 87-23, Mike 85-25
