Football Forecast – Championship Pick ’ems

By Mike Powell and David Keever

MP: The 17-week high school football season comes to a close this weekend with state championship games in eight classes, unfolding at college venues from Winston-Salem to Raleigh. In looking at the matchups, one is overcome with a sense of déjà vu. That’s because many of the teams that appeared in last year’s finals are back for a repeat. For instance, Shelby returns to defend its 2AA title, and the Golden Lions are in the finale for the sixth time in seven years. In addition, the 1A and 2A championship games are rematches from 2018. As my fellow sports scribe David Keever pointed out, seven of the eight 2018 Western champs kick it off again on Championship Saturday 2019. So it’s a different year but mostly the same lineup of powerhouse programs that dominate every fall. Here’s our picks, and it seems my theme is that the “West is the best.”
