Southwest 2A Conference member Chase continued its fast start by beating another Southern Piedmont 1A Conference team Friday night, rolling past Cherryville 40-0 at Chase.
The Trojans, who defeated Bessemer City in their season opener, are “a much improved team that has 18 returning starters,” Cherryville coach Tim Pruitt said.
The Chase defense limited the Ironmen (1-1, 1-0) to 118 yards of offense. Jayden Blanton accounted for 88 of those yards on 23 rushes, and Cooper Sloan had 42 yards on seven carries.
Cherryville’s defensive leaders were Andrew Beam with six tackles (one for a loss), Brandon Williams with six tackles, Christian Hahn and Maon Grindstaff with five tackles each.
“We gave up too many sacks (four) and had too many bad snaps and penalties,” Pruitt said. “On defense, we need to play better against the run, limit big plays and tackle better in space.”
The Ironmen face another daunting task this week with a trip to West Lincoln to face the 2A Rebels (1-0).
